How many times have you binge-watched movies and shows on your laptop and wished that you could just detach the screen so you could keep watching them while you lie in bed?

Have you tried using a tablet to type lengthy emails or messages? It’s atrocious! If that’s all you’ve ever known, perhaps it’s not actually that bad, but if you’ve ever had the luxury of typing on a keyboard and attempted to write the same amount on a touchscreen keyboard, it’s pretty awful.

That’s where 2-in-1 tablets really come in handy. They’re perfect for the jobs they’re required to do. To be fair, though, if you do all your work online or on a computer, you’ll need a high-end business model.

Let’s take a peek at what we’re looking for and the options we have!

Picking 2-in-1 Tablets

Everyone’s needs are different from one another’s but the gist is the same. You want mobility, versatility, and efficiency.

When they first came out, 2-in-1 tablets were pretty basic and there weren’t many impressive models. So, obviously, people started fawning over the iPad in all its glory and paying extra money for a keyboard.

We’re here to let you know that that isn’t your only option. While it’s a great option for any Apple-lover, this technology has come a long way.

Any good 2-in-1 tablet (or 2-in-1 laptop, whichever you’d prefer to call it) should come with a keyboard at no additional cost now. If one doesn’t, we’d suggest moving on to the next option! That is, after all, one of the biggest contributing factors to its name.

Without a keyboard, plenty of storage, and a good processor, it would just be a tablet. Without the touchscreen options and weightless feel (and hopefully a detachable, reversible, or flip screen), it would just be a laptop.

Okay, you got us. It’s a lot more complex than that… but you get the idea, right? We want it to function both ways! We want to have our cake and eat it, too!

  • How much money are you willing to spend?
    • Honestly, you can find some models for well under $200. If you don’t have any demands and you just want to fool around with some cool technology, those models are great.
    • If you plan on getting some work done and saving a lot of stuff to the system, though, you can expect to spend anywhere from $300 to $2,000.
    • Don’t let the price tag alarm you too much, unless you have a tight budget. As with any quality PC, the more you pay, the more you can expect from a model.
  • What are your intentions?
    • Do you want to gift this to someone that loves watching movies and messaging their friends? If no work or storing of data is required, there’s nothing wrong with going with a cheaper, less featureful model.
    • If you want to work, save large files to the hard drive, and/or stream music at the same time, you’ll need a beefy model. One that can withstand a large workload.
    • If you’re all about gaming, your research will need to be a lot more specific than ours. We did find out, however, that the bigger, the better. GPU and battery life come into play in this case.
    • We’ve found that many people enjoy drawing on touchscreens. If you’re an artist or have any interest in creating art on a tablet like you would on a piece of paper, you’ll want to look for a model that supports that.
  • Which features matter most?
    • Do you want the tablet part to detach completely or are you okay with flipping or swiveling the screen around?
      • If you want it to feel more like a keyboard, go with the latter.
      • If you expect it to act more like a tablet, the detachable option is best.
    • How important are screen size and weight to you?
      • Screen sizes typically vary from 12 to 17 inches in size.
      • 2-in-1 tablets/laptops can weigh anywhere from less than 3 pounds to over 8 pounds.
      • We don’t recommend larger models for children as they could be too big and bulky for them to comfortably handle.
    • Screen resolution is another thing to look at.
      • If you’re not worried about the quality of your movies, you’ll probably be fine with versions that have a resolution of 1366 x 768.
      • Anything around 1920 x 1080 or higher is what we’d suggest, especially if you really like watching HD videos or you’re interested in playing games.

As far as everything else goes, please refer to one of our computer posts if you want to learn more about the technical specifications of PCs.

To summarize the essentials list, you’ll want to pay attention to battery life, operating systems, memory size, hard disk descriptions, and CPU model family/generation.

Now, let’s take a look at our favorites!

Top-Tier 2-in-1 Tablets

Keep in mind that our search was limited to one of the most popular online stores in the world, so we didn’t go country-hopping, looking for the very best model each region has to offer.

We narrowed our selection down to a few different choices: powerful, business-oriented, or affordable.

Samsung Notebook 7 Spin

  • The Samsung Notebook 7 Spin is remarkable in many ways, including its affordability when all its features are taken into consideration.
    • This particular model isn’t affordable for everyone, though, costing a little less than $1,500.
  • To make up for its price tag, it is a full-on beast compared to most 2-in-1 tablets.
    • Has an Intel Dual-Core i7-7500U processor.
    • Has 16GB DDR4 RAM and 512GB SSD instead of a 1TB HDD.
    • As far as graphics go, you won’t be let down with 2GB of Nvidia GeForce 940MX.
  • Runs on Windows 10.
  • The screen is a little over 15 inches and is touchscreen.
    • The screen resolution is 1920 x 1080.
    • It can flip and fold in terms of changing between tablet and laptop use.
    • Weighs around 5 pounds.
  • The only thing we really don’t like about this model is its extremely short battery life. If you’re just using it for fun and aren’t gaming or working on it, it shouldn’t be much of an issue.
    • We don’t mind using it while it’s plugged in but that matters a lot to some people!

HP Elite X2 1012 G1

  • The HP Elite X2 1012 G1 is a business-oriented 2-in-1 that is here to meet your demands for an affordable price!
  • The screen is about 12″ in size.
    • Has a resolution of 1920 x 1280.
    • Screen is detachable.
    • Comes with an Active Pen, which makes the touchscreen much easier to use (and less likely to get filthy so quickly).
  • Runs on Windows 10.
    • The processor is an Intel Core m7-6Y75.
  • 8GB DDR3 RAM with 512GB SSD.
  • Has a front and rear-facing camera.
  • Weighs less than 3 pounds.

Lenovo Yoga 720 Business

  • The Lenovo Yoga 720 is affordable, yet business-oriented.
  • Features a screen over 13 inches in size.
    • The screen can be flipped around to stand up on its own in tent mode or you can use the keyboard part as the stand.
  • Has an Intel Quad Core i5-8250U processor.
  • 8GB DDR4 RAM with 256GB SSD.
    • Resolution is 1920 x 1080.
  • Features a fingerprint reader.
  • Runs on Windows 10.
  • Has an impressive battery life as long as you aren’t using it aggressively for extended periods of time.
  • Weighs a little less than 3 pounds.

Acer Aspire R15

  • The Acer Aspire R15 is the most powerful, cheaper model we came across.
    • It can usually be found for well under $1,000 despite the fact that it is full-sized and versatile.
  • Has a screen size of more than 15 inches with a resolution of 1920 x 1080.
  • Runs on an Intel Core i7-7500U processor.
    • Features 12GB DDR4 RAM and 256GB SSD.
    • 2GB NVIDIA GeForce 940MX graphics.
  • Operates on Windows 10.
  • Can flip backward, be used in tent mode, or folded tightly for more of a tablet feel.
  • Features a fingerprint reader and a powerful wireless antenna.
  • Weighs a little less than 5 pounds.
  • Impressive battery life, lasting almost 9 hours, depending on usage.

In Conclusion

It all depends on your needs, how much you’re willing to spend, and whether you want a detachable keyboard or a flip/swivel model.

We loved all four of these models so much that we wanted to keep all of them!

If we had to choose one, since we’re pretty tech-friendly, we’d have to go with the Samsung. It is powerful in more ways than one.

However, if you’re just testing the waters, we’d recommend the Acer! It’s totally affordable and surprisingly powerful. That company has come a long way!
