Everyone’s purpose for wanting or needing fitness trackers won’t be the same but it’s pretty safe to assume the number one priority of such an accessory is to help us live healthier lifestyles.

If you think you’ll only use a tracker temporarily, you may not wish to sink as much money into your purchase as someone planning to use one daily would. Keep your lifestyle, personal preferences, and budget in mind while reading over our list!

Picking the Right Fitness Trackers

Exercising is steadily becoming something easier and more exciting than ever before. It’s possible to exercise more parts of ourselves with extreme efficiency now. This is exciting in so many ways!

With rapidly evolving technology at our fingertips, we’re able to transform almost any task into something entertaining or engaging.

The same can be said for most fitness trackers. The accuracy of them has changed a lot since they first became popular but the way they work is basically the same.

Accelerometers allow fitness trackers to record the number of steps you take. You move forward and your movement and force cause the accelerometer to log however many steps were taken.

We’ve grown fond of fitness trackers because they encourage most of us to try to increase our number of steps with each day that passes… The idea of walking around doesn’t excite us but get a tracker involved and we’re already interested.

Being able to easily look down and tell we’ve outdone ourselves makes keeping up with our steps more gamelike than necessary for good health. We’ve caught ourselves trying to “beat our scores” all the time! We’re not complaining, though; we love it.

To be fair, we want to remind you that, if you have a smartphone, you can take the mobile app route before you try a tracker. Some are great! Check compatibility!

We didn’t get very far into our search until we learned about some essential features and came up with our own guideline for picking a suitable fitness tracker.

  • Our attention was first drawn to things like the battery, design, durability, price, screen size, weight, warranty, etc.
  • That helps us narrow our selection down. Now when we look into some options we can be a little picky!

The fitness tracker you decide on should primarily be easy to use and able to keep up with your lifestyle. It should be easy to clean and able to withstand daily wear.

It should also be easy to clean and able to withstand daily wear. Most electronics aren’t meant to be washed with soap and water. There are electronic and jewelry wipes available everywhere that may work but you should always read the manufacturer’s recommendation before the application of any cleanser.

Some battery covers will need to be opened with a special battery key or coin. Using a coin or an object that isn’t recommended could strip the backing and make it hard to replace or maintenance any batteries… be sure to read carefully!

  • Have you ever used a fitness tracker before?
    • Do you already know what to expect from them? If so (and it appeals to you), you might be interested in learning extra details, like what the display screen consists of or if you’ll be alerted if you’ve been inactive for too long!
    • Pedometers focus mostly on steps if you’re looking to keep it simple.
  • Which wearable style are you interested in?
    • Typically, you’ll be faced with 3 options: a watch, bracelet, or clip-on tracker.
    • More often than not, you’ll find fitness trackers made to be bracelets. We find that these are generally the easiest ones to use but we caution you to ensure it is waterproof if you don’t plan on taking it off much!
    • If you write or type a lot, you might want to consider one that can be used as both a clip-on and a bracelet.
    • Many smartwatches let you see your newsfeed, messages, the weather, your activity habits, and more!
  • Do any accessories or add-ons appeal to you?
    • Do you want your tracker to include a progress, heart rate, or sleep monitor? Searching for something sports-friendly or waterproof? Hoping for a GPS?
    • Can you sync the fitness tracker with anything else (like a smartphone)? If so, you’ll be sure to find an app that makes your routine more engaging. Once you get some apps involved, the list keeps growing.
    • When syncing, you’ll probably need to have an Internet connection.
    • Don’t misplace any dongles you receive as they will help your tracker sync to your computer easily and automatically.

Our 10 Favorite Fitness Trackers

For the most part, we avoided any fitness trackers that came across as “too flashy.” (We’re quite proud of our stuff but we don’t want it to get more attention than we do!)

As we had hoped, we came across several devices that weren’t bulky or bizarre and were still able to perform better than we expected.

Most of these fitness trackers are easy to clean and keep clean but don’t forget to let your skin breathe from time to time.

By the way, reward systems are wonderful. We didn’t make it a point to search for that perk but if the extra motivation helps you take extra steps, don’t settle for less!

Fitbit Zip

  • With the Fitbit Zip, you can see the amount of calories you’ve burned, the distance you’ve traveled, and the steps you’ve taken for the day.
    • All you have to do is give the display a little tap or sync your stats to your computer! (Wirelessly with the help of a dongle). The range is 20 feet.
  • It is a clip-on fitness tracker made mostly of thermoplastic material. The clip consists of metal and silicone.
    • You can purchase a wristband that will hold the Zip perfectly.
    • No matter where you wear it, it won’t be clearly visible to most people (unless you want it to be).
  • The battery can last anywhere from four to six months if the Zip isn’t used excessively! We love it when we don’t have to worry about charging yet another battery!
    • Once it’s lived a full life you can replace it easily! (A tool to open the battery door should be included with your purchase). You can usually buy a bundle of the appropriate batteries for a fair price online.
    • It is a 3v coin battery.
  • You won’t be able to swim with the Fitbit Zip attached but it can resist some water, like splashes, rain, or sweat.
    • Don’t use the Zip in weather below -4 degrees or higher than 113 degrees Fahrenheit. As long as you’re 30 thousand feet or below in altitude, the Zip should work fine.
  • The Zip has an LCD.
  • If you’ve filled out the information on the website and synced everything, the Zip should be able to tell the time, how many calories you’ve burned, and how many steps you’ve taken throughout the day.
    • The extra features aren’t super fine-tuned but work well enough for us.
  • The main reason we’re not complaining is because the price is right. It’s small, sleek, and does what we need without hurting our wallet.

Fitbit Flex

  • The Fitbit Flex does everything the Fitbit Zip does and then some!
    • It allows you to keep track of burned calories, distance walked, stationary time, active minutes, and total steps throughout the day.
    • Your sleep cycle will be monitored automatically when worn and you can choose to set a silent alarm that gently vibrates to wake you up.
    • It has LED display and indicator lights (5; white).
  • You can change the wristband easily and there are a few different kinds to choose from!
  • You can wirelessly sync your Fitbit Flex with a smartphone or computer and take advantage of the awesome app.
    • Within the app, you’ll be able to journal food intake, cheer on or taunt your fitness friends, keep track of workouts, get badges for meeting goals, set goals to get better sleep, and more.
    • Your stats will be displayed in charts and graphs that are easy to understand.
    • The syncing range is 20 feet.
  • The Flex is water-resistant, avoiding sweat, splashes, and rain easily.
    • It isn’t advertised as a fitness tracker for sports but it is made of elastomer which is often used in sportswear. The Flex will probably meet your fitness needs if you only plan on doing some light jogging or brisk walking.
  • When you’re on your way to meeting your daily goal, LEDs will light up and encourage you to keep moving! Each 20% completion (of any goal) will trigger a display.
    • Curious as to how close you are to that goal? Tap the display twice for Main Goal progress. Starting or stopping sleep monitoring, tap the display rapidly for a couple seconds.
    • Your daily totals will be kept for 30 days at a time. Detailed descriptions of the last 7 days of activity will be available, too.
  • The battery life on the Fitbit Flex is approximately 5 days. (Flashing lights drain batteries quickly).
    • It has a lithium-polymer battery and takes about two hours to charge.
  • This fitness tracker is compatible with most Windows, Android, and iOS computers and smartphones.

  • The Polar H7 is capable of monitoring your heart rate as well as being a fitness tracker!
    • It’s important for many people to see their heart rates before and after exercise. Knowing your rates and the average for efficient exercises will help you create the perfect routine and monitor your progress.
    • The heart rate sensor provides real-time data for your benefit.
    • The H7 works with an impressive amount of Bluetooth-enabled gym equipment.
  • It straps on and is adjustable in size.
    • You can actually use the strap with several other Polar products!
    • The strap should fit most M and XXL sizes. (It should be worn around the ribcage). When worn properly, it should be comfortable and barely noticeable.
    • You will need to wet the electrode areas before application.
  • The H7 is compatible with most devices running Android 4.3 and newer or iPhone 4s and newer.
    • It’s compatible with many apps but Polar Beat and Polar Flow are recommended.
  • You can clean the H7 by detaching it from the strap. The strap can be washed with soap and water as long as it is dried completely before use. The sensor itself can be wiped clean.
  • This Polar fitness tracker is backed by a limited two-year warranty.
  • The battery should last a month or more depending on use.
  • For the price, this is a nice choice. It isn’t over-the-top with any features other than its ability to monitor your heart rate and it isn’t gaudy. Since it straps to your chest, unless your torso is bare, you’ll be the only one to see it!
    • We love being efficient in secret!

  • The Garmin vivofit 2 can tell the time as well as it can tell you to move.
    • When you’ve been inactive for an hour, the vivofit 2 will alert you and won’t reset until you’ve walked around.
    • The bar builds up in 15-minute increments. A red bar will display and an alert will sound when you need to move. This is beneficial for office workers who can’t look at their phone or watch constantly in hopes of staying active.
    • The sound may be turned off but we don’t recommend that if you’re trying to get fit!
  • It has a segmented LCD.
  • You can monitor calories burned, distanced walked, steps taken, and the time of day with this fitness tracker.
    • Your activity will be logged and learned in order to create a personalized daily goal. You don’t have to accept this goal but it will be proposed.
    • Wirelessly (and automatically) sync to Garmin Connect and you can share your progress, compete with others, or earn badges!
  • The vivofit 2 is more water-resistant than many of our other options, being able to function in 50 meters of water!
    • If you like to get your exercise from swimming this is one of the best fitness trackers to get acquainted with.
    • In case it wasn’t obvious enough, you can definitely take a shower with this wristband on.
  • It is designed to be worn constantly. You need only to set it to sleep mode if you wish to monitor your sleep.
  • We assumed with all these features that the battery life would be horrendous for the vivofit 2… we were wrong!
    • The battery is expected to last longer than a year, even with frequent use!
  • The model we chose doesn’t feature a heart rate sensor but that is an option for an extra price.

  • The Fitbit One is powerful for such a tiny fitness tracker!
    • You can keep up with burned calories, distance walked, stairs climbed, and steps taken easily with wireless syncing.
    • The stair feature means that it doesn’t just have an accelerometer… it has an altimeter, too!
    • The range for syncing wirelessly is 20 feet.
  • It has OLED and a clock so you can also tell the time!
    • Not enough? You can also monitor your sleep! If you use this feature, don’t forget to set the silent alarm so it will vibrate and not wake up your partner!
  • This is a clip-on fitness tracker.
    • This is hardly noticeable compared to wristbands and watches. You can clip it to a pocket, bra, or belt without difficulty.
  • With all the extra features it has to have crappy battery life, right?
    • Wrong! The One has a lithium-polymer battery that should charge in 2 hours and last 10 to 14 days.
    • To ensure the battery remains in top condition, it’d be best to charge the battery once a week if it’s been used.
  • The Fitbit One can’t be taken for a swim but it can resist rain, sweat, and splashing.
  • When used with compatible apps, you can see a weekly activity report and a daily count for the last 23 days.
    • As with the other Fitbits, you can also log food intakes with the app. This feature helps you keep an eye on your calorie intake versus how many calories you’ve burned!

Garmin vivosmart HR+

  • The Garmin vivosmart HR+ is a fitness-tracking beast!
    • It is meant to be worn as a wristband, is compatible with Garmin Connect, and can automatically sync with your phone or computer.
  • You can enjoy an intense workout and run with this fitness tracker.
    • The vivosmart HR+ has a GPS and a heart rate sensor. The GPS won’t be interrupted by tree coverage, either.
    • You can track your calorie intake, steps taken, distance traveled, stairs climbed, and more.
    • This is a waterproof fitness tracker, being able to function in 50 meters of water!
  • If you set a timer or start running a lap you won’t have to worry about pausing or starting a new lap on your tracker.
    • It can pause and start timers back up depending on your speed. (The mode can be set to walk or run; try out the virtual pacer).
    • It can also start a new lap on its own thanks to the GPS.
  • Keep an eye on your heart rate with the wrist-based sensor.
  • With Move IQ, you won’t have to start timed activities.
    • Keep an eye on your biking & elliptical training, running, swimming, and walking effortlessly with the Garmin Connect sensor.
    • These logs won’t be as detailed as they would be if you recorded a timed activity on the HR+ but it lets you know you exercised in case you forget.
  • As with some of our other options, the HR+ will vibrate to remind you to move if you’ve been inactive for a while.
  • Surpassing our expectations, this fitness tracker can let you view your notifications on your wrist like a smartwatch does.
    • Once connected, you’ll be able to view your calendar, calls, emails, social media, texts, and more!
    • We’re starting to wonder if there’s anything this vivosmart can’t do!
  • The battery life expectancy for the vivosmart HR+ is approximately 5 days without constant GPS usage.
    • It uses a lithium-ion battery.
  • Even though the price isn’t ridiculously high on this model you can rest easy knowing any defects will be covered under the limited one year warranty!

Withings Go

  • The Withings Go is stylish and can be worn on the wrist or clipped onto your clothing.
    • Withings is most popular for designing an elegant watch with fitness tracking capabilities.
    • The Go can function as an analog watch if you press the center of the screen down.
    • You can even clip the Go to your keychain!
  • Many of our other choices contain vibration motors that allow you to set silent, vibrating alarms.
    • Because Withings tried to make this an affordable fitness tracker there is not a vibration motor in this model.
    • We’re okay with that but if you like being silently reminded to move you might want to look at our other picks again!
  • This is a waterproof fitness tracker.
    • You can swim 50 meters below the surface and your activity should be logged automatically.
  • If you sync the Go with the Withings Health Mate app you’ll be able to keep up with your activity levels, blood pressure, food intake, heart rate, and weight.
    • You can also set reminders for yourself. The app has suggestions but you can create your own! Our favorite is the reminder to stay away from caffeine later in the day.
  • The battery is meant to last 6 to 8 months without charging and stays on all the time.
    • This is meant to encourage you to wear it every day and enjoy a healthier lifestyle without causing you to obsess over the features.
    • E Ink allows you to read the display at any time without draining power.
  • There are five different colors to choose from (for the casing), none of which will increase the price. (We’ve noticed that choosing a different color can be costly when it comes to certain things).
  • You can track your sleep cycles easily.
  • When you’ve met your goal, you’ll see a star in the center of the screen.
    • The count doesn’t end there. The star remains in the center and if you keep walking more marks will appear, allowing you to soar past your previous goal.
  • We love how effortless tracking can be with the Withings Go.
    • You don’t have to make an effort to keep up with anything as long as you use the app. If you don’t use the app? No biggie; the step counter and clock are great on their own!

Polar Loop

  • The Polar Loop is another affordable wrist-based fitness tracker.
    • Your activity will be tracked at 5 different levels of intensity: resting, sitting, low, medium, or high. (High intensity being running; resting intensity being sleep or lying down).
    • Ooh, pretty… there are 85 LED lights that will encourage and motivate you to move.
  • The Loop is comfortable enough to be worn 24/7.
    • It is waterproof! (Up to 50 meters).
  • Remember the Polar H7? (Mentioned earlier).
    • The Loop works with the heart rate monitor from the H7!
    • When you’re serious about burning calories, wearing this combination will make it ridiculously easy! You’ll be able to see an extremely detailed report of your activity levels and the energy you’ve spent versus what you’ve consumed.
    • Use the Polar Flow app for the full experience. If you have a personal trainer, they can see your stats from the app.
  • You’ll be able to monitor your sleep activity if you use the app. To start tracking your sleep just wear the Loop to bed!

    • It’s wrist-based but you can use the H7 with it for better (and more detailed) results.
  • The display is sleek and trendy — it looks a lot like a smartwatch. It is touchscreen.
  • You can tell time, set a timer, start a lap, track your distance, count your calories, take calls, reply to messages, monitor your sleep, and more with this fitness tracker!
    • When you’ve reached your daily goal a cool celebratory message will display. It doesn’t get tiring seeing that screen pop up and congratulate us!
    • With the Polar Flow app, you won’t have to manually track your sleep, it can be done automatically with the A360.
  • Like several of our other selections, if you’ve been sitting for too long you’ll get a friendly reminder (vibration).
    • It will also vibrate when you get a notification from your phone.
  • The A360 is water-resistant up to 30 meters (which means that you can take a shower with it but you shouldn’t swim with it).
  • The battery should last two weeks with constant use and one hour of training every day.
  • The Polar A360 is durable and can be worn while running or doing various exercises.
    • We absolutely love the display and touchscreen functionality!

  • The Amazfit Moonbeam is one of our most stylish choices.
    • Don’t let its fashionable design fool you, though. It can handle a lot of activity!
    • It’s also composed of hypoallergenic material. The main module shouldn’t irritate your skin and is also water-resistant. (Don’t swim with it!)
  • Easily keep track of calories, distance, running, sleep and steps.
    • It does not have the option to set a silent (vibrating) alarm as with some of the other models.
  • You can wear the Moonbeam as a bracelet or a necklace with multiple accessories available on the market.
    • Men, don’t worry, as a bracelet, it won’t be gaudy. The core has a gold-plated frame and the band is leather. (Don’t like the white? The black band option shouldn’t differ in price too greatly).
  • It has a vibration motor so you’ll be able to detect incoming calls or notifications.
  • It works with most newer Android and iOS phones.
    • The app is easy to use and install. Since there’s no display screen to read your result, you’ll want to be sure to install the app.
  • It isn’t the most extensive choice on our list but it is the most stylish and discreet (if privacy is your thing).
    • It’s only water-resistant up to 3m.

The Top 3

We love most of the choices on our list because they’re all pretty affordable. We could’ve listed a bunch of expensive ones but these seem to do the job well enough! Our wallets like them better anyway.

Screen type didn’t matter much to us. We did, however, concern ourselves with style, efficiency, and price. Battery life was important to us, too, but if it was rechargeable we tried not to scrutinize too much.

  1. The Garmin vivosmart HR+ is our favorite choice by a landslide. It does absolutely everything we expected a fitness tracker to do and more. It’s waterproof, can check your heart rate and your phone notifications, and nudges you when you’ve been inactive. Obviously, it can keep track of your activity but it also has GPS! It can handle slight jarring, so if you’re a runner, you can run laps with it… we love the Auto Lap feature.
  2. For anyone truly concerned about their health (and their heart rate), the Polar H7 is another good choice. It’s discreet (you wear it around your chest/ribs) and more personal than fitness trackers that don’t have a heart rate sensor. It’s also compatible with several other Polar products, including a few on our list!
  3. The Fitbit Flex is a little more costly but it’s amazing. The long battery life (5 days) and motivational LED lights were the little boosters we needed to work out several days a week. It’s comfortable enough to wear constantly and can be worn in the shower. If you’re a Fitbit fiend, this isn’t one to pass by.
