If energy efficiency isn’t even the first thing on your mind, ease-of-use and personalization should be when it comes to choosing between smart thermostats.

They are definitely meant to help lower the overall cost of running heat or air throughout your home but they’re great for many other reasons!

Selecting a Smart Thermostat

There are several things to consider when narrowing down your selection of smart thermostats. Price points, functionality, installation, and more will all determine your general experience with these gadgets.

If for some reason you aren’t sure what a thermostat is, they’re handy tools that help us cool and/or heat our homes.

It might come as a surprise to some, but air-conditioning and central heat aren’t common across the globe. We’re a bit spoiled around these parts.

If we’re already spoiled, why not spoil ourselves a bit more?!

Those of us that are lucky enough to know the pleasures of cool air on a scorching-hot summer day or heat on a bone-chilling evening know how amazing it would be to control those temperatures at your fingertips without getting up from the bed or couch.

Some of you may have already boarded the train of smart home technology but some of us are late to the party, so let’s get familiar with our options.

  • What’s your budget?
    • Many smart thermostats can cost anywhere from $100 to $800.
    • The more you spend, the more you should get out of your equipment.
    • If you want to go somewhere in the middle, you can get programmable thermostats. They’re a bit less expensive than the smart options with similar features.
  • How much work are you willing to do?
    • Some models are available for purchase with expert installation while others are DIY projects.
    • If you aren’t familiar (or comfortable) with the idea of fishing wires through walls or setting up new things, be sure to pay extra for professional help.
    • Have your eyes set on a certain model that doesn’t have the option to pay for expert installation? Call some companies around you and see if they’re willing to help!
    • HVAC technicians can come out and examine your gear and let you know if you need anything extra to set up your smart thermostat.
    • If you don’t want to worry about consulting a professional, there are options out there from third-parties that will allow you to use adapters and extensions to make adding a C-wire easier.
    • If you can get into the habit of setting the thermostat to use less energy when you’re not around, you may not even need a smart model! Smart thermostats just make it easier for those of us that are a bit forgetful and still want to save money on our monthly bills.
  • What kind of equipment are you working with?
    • Some smart thermostats cannot function with certain heating and cooling systems.
    • Do you have a C-wire? Many smart models require this, otherwise, your existing equipment could become compromised over time.
    • Very old HVAC units may make it difficult for you to make the smart switch.
    • Depending on the size of your home and your temperature preferences, you may want to install more than one thermostat or unit.
    • Placement and location matter, too. If a thermostat is installed in the brightest, warmest room of your house, it’ll probably run much more often than one that is placed in an ideal spot.
    • Something we love about certain smart thermostats is a remote sensor. Just place them wherever you spend most of your time and it will learn to adjust the temperature of that room for you.
  • Which features matter most to you?
    • Some options are more aesthetically pleasing than others.
    • Others are more functional with less-appealing designs.
    • Adaptation and learning technology are most important to us because they make our lives easier!
    • If you have any other smart gadgets set up in your home, you might want to make sure that the thermostat you’re interested in is compatible with those.
      • If they can’t control each other, at least see if they can use the same assistant. It’d be a nightmare to have a thermostat that only works with Alexa if you’re a dedicated Apple user.

We could write a book on all the things that need to be taken into consideration when it comes to smart thermostats… but we’re mostly here to help you look through some of the best options currently available online.

As we mentioned earlier, if any of the electrical stuff confuses you, don’t hesitate to consult an HVAC technician. If you don’t want to hire someone professionally, see if any of your friends or family members know how these things work and ask them to do a walkthrough with you!

Our Favorite Smart Thermostats

Nest Learning Thermostat (T3007ES)

  • The Nest Learning Thermostat is, by far, the best-of-the-best right now.
    • It’s relatively affordable, costing much less than $500 on average.
    • This is the third generation model, so many kinks and bugs have been worked out compared to previous models.
  • As its name suggests, it is meant to learn your habits and your environment.
    • This makes life easier for most of us because it takes away the need to get up every time it storms to change the temperature.
    • If you live in a humid environment, you’ll appreciate this technology more than anyone. There’s hardly anything worse than finally getting your home to a comfortable temperature when suddenly a thunderstorm rolls in and makes it unbearably hot or cold, regardless of how nice it was earlier.
  • We love how easy it is to see your settings from afar, thanks to Farsight. It displays the temperature in a large, well-lit manner.
  • Worried about how it will look in your home? There are four colors to choose from, including black, white, copper, and stainless steel.
  • Already familiar with Nest products because of their security systems? Awesome! Most Nest accessories can communicate with each other and plenty of other smart appliances, keeping you filled in on the latest activities while you aren’t home.
    • Speaking of communication, it can be controlled by Alexa if you have the appropriate gear!
  • This is pretty easy to set up with the appropriate equipment, usually taking less than an hour.
  • There are three different heating stages and two cooling stages. Of course, there’s a fan function, too.
    • Worried about someone fiddling with the controls while you’re gone? Has an auxiliary and emergency heat setting and will alert you when those kick on.
    • Need a little moisture added to or taken out of the air? No problem!
  • The LCD screen has a resolution of 480 x 480.
  • The sensors pick up on ambient light, far-field and near-field activities, humidity levels, and overall temperature.
  • Does not need regular battery replacement like some models do.

Honeywell RTH9585WF1004/W

  • The Honeywell RTH9585WF1004/W is affordable, efficient, and sleek.
    • It usually costs less than $500 even with the expert installation add-on.
  • The display screen is large and easy for most people to read.
    • As if that wasn’t good enough, it is totally touchscreen! The touchscreen displays and settings can also be customized.
    • You can read more than one number at a time, like humidity levels inside and outside, weather reports, and thermostat settings.
  • Can be used with Alexa.
  • The programmable settings can be adjusted pretty easily depending on your needs.
    • Don’t want to fiddle with it yourself very much? It can be programmed to pick up on your electric company’s peak times and prices!
  • If you’re anywhere near as forgetful as we are, you’ll be pleased to know that there are plenty of alert options on this model.
    • You can be reminded to change the air filter and humidifier pads.
    • If you’re facing an extremely hot or cold day, you’ll be alerted.
    • If your internet connection fails or goes in and out too much, you’ll also be notified of this.
  • This is another Energy Star-certified option and frequent battery replacement will not be necessary.

Ecobee4

  • The Ecobee4 is probably our favorite smart thermostat because of its versatility and total access!
    • Not only does it work with Alexa, but it also works with Apple HomeKit, Google Assistant, Cortana, Samsung SmartThings, IFTTT, Wink and more!
  • If you don’t have a C-wire, don’t worry! This comes with a power extender kit.
    • If you don’t want to fool with any of the setup, as easy as it may be, you can also purchase expert installation.
  • Comes with remote sensors that detect how many people are in a room and the varying temperatures of said room.
    • More than one sensor can be used if you’re willing to make an additional purchase or two.
  • Can be used with several different platforms and is incredibly smart!
    • When set up correctly, it has over 10,000 skills!
    • Want to hear a joke? Ask it to tell you one. Want to hear the latest news without reading anything? Ask the Ecobee4 to update you!
  • In terms of energy efficiency, this has one of the highest ratings.
    • Don’t care so much about that? It has a 3-year warranty, which is almost unheard of for this technology.
  • The display is large and features a touchscreen.
    • Generally speaking, though, it isn’t as easy to read as our other options were.

In Summary

All three of these options are definitely the best currently available to the average online consumer. We are obsessed with them and we can’t wait to see small businesses start using them!

Of course, saving money is incredibly important, but we really enjoy high-functionality and versatility. If you want to put in the least amount of work possible, the Ecobee4 is probably the best choice!
