Turkey Fryers Aren’t Just For Thanksgiving

While most people may associate these over-sized frying pots with the task of preparing an enormous feast for numerous family members, that’s not all they’re good for.

In fact, if you enjoy gardening and/or canning, you’ll be sure to get plenty of use out of almost any of the turkey fryers you come across.

  • How much money can you expect to spend?
    • Generally, you’ll find turkey frying kits anywhere from $20 to well over $300.
    • If you already have a 10-quart pot (or larger), you can settle on turkey fryers that don’t include the piece you have. These will typically be much cheaper than any other option.
    • The more accessories there are, the more pennies you’ll probably have to spend.
  • What size and style do you need?
    • In all reality, you’ll probably need at least a 20-quart pot to fry a whole, small turkey.
    • If you’re wanting to go big or go home, you’ll want a 44-quart pot or larger, as these can generally hold turkeys that weigh more than 20 pounds.
    • Keep the number of mouths you’re feeding in mind as well as the weight of the turkey you plan to cook. Unless you want to spend all day cooking two small turkeys for a large family, you’ll need a big pot! If it’s just you, your spouse, and your kid, a smaller one should work just as well.
      • If you’re doing some serious cooking, like for a family reunion or something, some burners can hold the weight of a full 100-quart pot!
    • Your ability to lift something should also be a concern. If you have trouble lifting heavy things, you might want to opt for an aluminum model instead of a stainless steel selection.
      • Our motto is: if you can’t comfortably lift it without anything in it, you certainly won’t be able to lift it when it’s full of food.
      • Stainless steel is much easier to clean and cook with but high-grade aluminum is no joke, either. You just might not want to can your tomatoes with that pot unless the manual gives you the go-ahead.
  • Which features, components, and other miscellaneous things matter most to you?
    • A meat thermometer is one of the most important tools to have on hand when you’re cooking an entire bird or huge slab of meat.
      • You don’t want anyone getting sick from something you’ve cooked (or, rather, didn’t cook enough).
      • Turkey is definitely safe to eat if it is cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit and can maintain that temperature for at least a few minutes before being served. Some say a lower temperature is fine as well but we’re not taking any chances.
    • If you have food safety under control, then what about a strainer or a basket that will make pulling things out safer and easier for you?
      • Not only will baskets and such be a blessing in disguise, so will heavy-duty handles!
      • If you choose outdoor turkey fryers (like the kind that require propane), you’ll likely want good, sturdy handles for carrying the cooled-down unit inside for cleaning.
    • To use oil or not to use oil? That is the true question, these days!
      • Healthy is the new fabulous and many manufacturers have worked hard on offering appliances that support such a lifestyle.

Be Safe When Using Turkey Fryers

As we’ve already mentioned, hot oil is extremely dangerous! Oil splatters can cause small fires and explosions, depending on where they land.

We beg you to be as safe as possible when frying any food… especially whole birds!

Use gloves, protective eyewear, and the like if you need to. Who cares if you look goofy as long as you’re safe?

  • Helpful tip: 
    • Do not place a frozen or wet bird in a hot fryer!

This is asking for a catastrophe! Water and oil don’t mix, as it is. Add heat to that equation and you’re in for a serious disaster. It’s always best to make sure your bird is fully thawed and patted dry before it is placed in a fryer.

If using an outdoor turkey fryer, avoid extremely enclosed areas. Avoid extremely windy conditions, too, as this could fuel the fire a bit more than one would like.

Also, unless you’re using an air fryer, you will want to avoid seasoning the outside of the turkey until the cooking is complete! That’s why seasoning infusers and turkey basters exist.

External seasonings could react negatively with hot oil. For the best results, season the turkey’s insides in a regular fryer and use a dry rub on those that are going in an oil-less fryer.
