What is an Upright Vacuum Cleaner?

  • Put in pleasantly simple terms, they’re basically vacuums that aren’t in the shape of a canister or portable vacuum cleaner.
    • Put even simpler, they’re vacuums that “stand.”
    • They usually have an arm handle.
  • In the past, upright vacuum cleaners weren’t always easy to store and definitely weren’t ideal for any allergy sufferers.
    • Canister vacuums aren’t known for flinging dust and allergens up in the air towards our faces like upright vacuums used to be known for! (Some still do this, unfortunately, but thankfully, technology keeps advancing)!
  • Canister vacuum cleaners were designed to be used on floors and surfaces that weren’t carpets.
    • Many are capable of vacuuming curtains and delicate, decorative rugs.
  • Upright vacuum cleaners are typically meant to be used in front of yourself instead of behind.
    • These vacuums are great for areas that lack furniture, like halls or living rooms. Since you won’t need to stop and vacuum nooks and crannies in these areas, a canister cleaner could become a hassle. (We’re thinking about your shoulders and upper back)!
      • Our suggestion, if you love canister vacuum cleaners (and have the appropriate amount of storage space), is to own a standard (yet efficient) model of both.
        • If you don’t have the space (or this idea doesn’t appeal to you — as it didn’t, with us), many upright vacuum cleaners have wonderful, flexible extensions that work just as well as canister cleaners!
        • The only thing is that the hose might not be nearly as flexible as on a canister cleaner, depending on the vacuum you choose.

What Do Allergies Have to Do with Anything?

If you’ve ever been vacuuming and had to stop in order to sneeze uncontrollably, cough, wheeze, or anything else alarming, your allergies (or asthma) were probably triggered. Hopefully, it was minor and you’re okay! If you weren’t so lucky, we hope you’ve found a good vacuum cleaner!

Hopefully, it was minor and you’re okay! If you weren’t so lucky, we hope you’ve found a good vacuum cleaner!

When things like dust & dust mites, pet dander, pollen, or smoke get stirred up by the process of vacuuming, your immune system is attacked. (Your face is right above the vacuum, there’s no way you’re avoiding that without a heavy-duty face mask or something).

These days, it’s become much easier to locate upright vacuum cleaners that feature HEPA seals, filters, and such… which we’re grateful for! Our backs and shoulders tend to disagree with canister cleaners more often than not, so we love upright cleaners. We just need them to help prevent allergy symptoms more than they cause them.

What Does HEPA Mean?

High-efficiency particulate air.” When you need a HEPA filter, it’s probably more along the lines of “high-efficiency particulate arrestance.”

This “high-efficiency” stuff isn’t taken lightly when it comes to constructing genuine, efficient HEPA filters. Granted, the same way some companies try to claim that their sugary products are kind of healthy, some companies will try to slap a HEPA seal on something and call it a day, hoping we’ll take the bait. That’s where good research comes into play.

We’re not interested in products that merely make claims, we want to find the best upright vacuum cleaners of 2016 with HEPA seals and filters!

◊ In order to be a true HEPA filtration vacuum, it needs to have at least 99.97% efficiency in vacuuming and filtering particles as little as 0.3 micrometers. ◊

  • Clueless as to how large micrometers are?
    • They’re one millionth of a meter.
      • A meter is approximately 3.28ft.
    • Most people can’t see things that are less than 50 micrometers in size.
      • One strand of hair is approximately 80-100 micrometers in diameter.
      • One strand of a spiderweb usually doesn’t reach more than 6 micrometers in diameter!
        • (Yet, they seem to feel much thicker on our unsuspecting skin!)

Isn’t it fascinating that the air pollutants that cause our allergies and asthma to act up are so tiny? We do believe it’s fascinating, but that’s why it’s especially important to check the depth of manufacturers’ claims before you buy a HEPA vacuum.

If you can’t find evidence anywhere that the vacuum is 99.97% efficient against 0.3-micrometer allergens, it probably isn’t worth paying a ton of extra money for…

If its power is comparable and in the high nineties-range, that’s a totally different story. Some machines will successfully capture 94-99% of particles smaller than 0.5 micrometers. The research has simply shown that many of us fall victim to believing whatever a sticker says. We don’t want you to make that same mistake.

As long as the price is fair and all claims are found to be accurate, we’re all for making an intelligent purchase!

Whatever you do, if HEPA is important to you, ensure the filter has been certified or (at the least) meets your own, minimum requirements for comfortable living!

Questions to Ask Yourself

When it comes down to it, you need to be confident with your purchase. You don’t want to buy anything that doesn’t grab your attention for a good reason. You don’t want to break any pre-existing budgets. You probably don’t want to buy a canister cleaner if you only have carpeted floors. All those things aside, let’s take a look at what we might need out of an upright vacuum cleaner.

  • What kind of debris do you usually vacuum up?
    • It might seem like a silly question at first but certain vacuums can’t handle food particles. (Pet hair, either).
  • What kind of floors do you have?
    • Carpet, hardwood, laminate, tile, etc. One of each? A few different kinds?
    • If you live in a home with many types of floors and you don’t wish to change them, you’ll need to keep an eye out for vacuums that efficiently clean any type of surface.
      • That means by itself and with extensions!
  • Does it come with a hose and/or other accessories?
    • If you choose a vacuum with a rotating brush (also known as a roller brush), does it have the option to turn off that function?
      • (In order to efficiently clean non-carpeted floors without making a mess).
    • If there isn’t a “hard floor” option or switch, do the accessories work well on hard floors?
      • Most importantly, will you be able to manipulate these accessories without straining yourself?
      • Upper and lower back pain is no joke to us and we suggest looking into the functionality of each upright vacuum cleaner you’re interested in!
    • Are the hose and accessories easy to use?
      • Can you safely use one of the extensions on blinds, curtains, ceiling fans, etc.?
        • If you’re tall enough or motivated enough to be able to clean those things without an attachment, good for you! If not, an option like this is nice to have.
  • What’s the weight?
    • Many companies know that most of us prefer lightweight, sleek accessories for our housework. That doesn’t mean all of us want something light, though.
    • We feel like it’s pretty important to point out that certain types of lightweight, upright vacuums are likely to tip over while you’re using the hose or accessories.
      • This doesn’t always mean that the vacuum is garbage; they’re often superb vacuums that just don’t weigh enough.
      • You can think of them as an annoying sibling, tapping you on the shoulder while you’re vacuuming pet hair off the couch… if the vacuum is good enough. If not, you may want to look into a model that’s a little heavier.
        • Many manufacturer’s sites will include weight in descriptions, in case we happen to miss any on here.
    • If you want a heavier vacuum, be sure it isn’t so heavy that it will cause physical decline or discomfort over continued use.
      • One of us has had a vacuum that was so heavy they had to take a break from using it every few minutes because of the strain it caused on their back!
  • Does it require a bag?
    • Vacuums that don’t require bags are more cost efficient.
      • Since you’re usually required to empty the contents into a trash can by opening the top or bottom, you may put yourself at risk if you suffer from asthma or allergies.
      • We suggest learning whether or not the specific model has a safe way of emptying the contents or considering purchasing a mask to wear when emptying it.
        • Only if you insist on a bagless vacuum, that is. If you don’t mind using bags, then we do insist checking out some awesome, bagged vacuums!
    • Vacuums that do require bags are usually more allergy-efficient.
      • You usually won’t have to worry about your health with these. They tend to be sealed up, nice and tightly.
      • If you dislike cleaning the air filter out constantly, you might enjoy knowing that most bagged vacuum cleaners are pretty good about not getting clogged filters!
  • Do you need an anti-allergen vacuum with HEPA filters?
  • Do you have pets?
    • Even if you don’t have crippling allergies, pet dander and hair can begin to take over. If you have a pet, for your own sake (and for the sake of any visitors’ clothing), consider an upright vacuum that’s pet-friendly.
      • Some pet-friendly vacuums even come with grooming attachments! (Talk about convenient — if your animal isn’t scared of the noise, anyway).
  • Do you like the design?
    • Do you like upright vacuums with thick handles or stick vacuum cleaners?
      • Stick vacuum cleaners tend to be more portable and extraordinarily lightweight.
    • Don’t buy anything that makes you cringe upon glancing at it.
      • You’ll only regret it, trust us.
        • We’ve settled on vacuums we didn’t like the appearance of before and you better believe we were unhappy, overall, with our purchase.
    • They always told us not to judge a book by its cover, but… we tend to be superficial creatures, to an extent.
      • We want to purchase a vacuum cleaner we’re proud of and can show off!
    • We also want to buy a vacuum cleaner that’s storage-friendly.
      • We like the idea of slim, easy-to-hide vacuums.
      • With heavier vacuums, you may discover that finding the appropriate place to store it can be difficult.
    • Do you have to fiddle with a lot of switches just to use it?
      • Foot-operated switches are becoming more and more popular because, well, all you have to do is push it down to get going!
  • Does it have headlights?
    • “But we’re not car-shopping.”
    • We know, but sometimes headlights on a vacuum are totally worth it.
  • How much does it cost?
    • This is usually the first question we ask ourselves, but when it comes to items that make our personal lives more comfortable and clean… we tend to splurge.
    • Don’t go cheap just because you might feel like you need to. Don’t spend several hundred dollars, either.
      • Narrow your selection down (if you haven’t already) to approximately three items.
      • Between these items, compare efficiency and price.
      • Select the one that will benefit you the most, yet is still affordable. If you can’t afford it today, consider saving up for the purchase for a couple of weeks first!
        • Try not to jeopardize your comfort with overly-expensive purchases unless you can afford them or pay them off without interest!

We could ask ourselves many more questions, but we think you’ve got the basics now! The most important part for you to understand, in our opinion, was the HEPA filter information! Now, to discuss our options!

Consumer’s Choice Reviews’ Top 10 Upright Vacuum Cleaners

Oreck Commercial XL2100RHS

  • This is a wonderful, commercial-use vacuum. We wanted to add this to our list in case anyone is searching for an affordable, professional-grade upright vacuum.
    • You could benefit from this without having a business to take care of… but you might not think it’s beautiful.
    • Despite its standard appearance, it only weighs around eight pounds!
      • The bag can hold the machine’s weight (approximately) before needing to be changed.
    • It’s pretty compact for its power, too.
      • It’s about an inch shy from four feet tall (forty-seven inches), nine inches in length, and a foot wide (twelve inches).
      • This vacuum can handle a twelve-inch-wide path.
      • The cord is thirty-five feet long.
    • The Oreck Commercial XL2100RHS is backed by a one-year warranty with commercial use.
  • The biggest downfall, in our opinion, is that it doesn’t come equipped with HEPA filters or bags.
    • On the bright side, there are HEPA bags you can purchase for this machine!
    • Another plus is that, though not HEPA filtration, it is sealed with Saniseal.
      • That means when the bag’s full and ready to be changed, the inner bag closes itself.
    • You can also safely vacuum relatively small pieces of debris up.
  • You’re unlikely to damage furniture or walls you bump into thanks to the non-marring bumpers.
    • You can use this upright vacuum flat against the floor (almost — minus the size of the bag, handle, and head), which is excellent for vacuuming underneath heavy fixtures!
  • Don’t worry about flipping any switches if you’re vacuuming a rug or bare floor.
    • Microsweep technology is to thank for that!

Oreck Magnesium SP LW100

  • This puppy is the recipient of the Gold Seal of Approval!
    • It has been certified by the Carpet and Rug Institute as a high-performance vacuum.
    • Add the fact that it features a HEPA bag internally to the above and we can already consider it one of the best!
      • The HEPA bag successfully traps 99.97% of allergens 0.3 micrometers in size.
      • In addition to HEPA filtration, you’re even more protected from allergens with the Saniseal system.
  • The Oreck Magnesium SP weighs around eight pounds… a trait Oreck is known for lately!
    • Despite its lightness, it’s pretty tough.
    • On certain floors, it can seem to pull itself!
    • The cord is thirty feet long.
    • It stands about half an inch shy of four feet tall (forty-seven & a half inches), one foot wide (twelve inches), and ten & a half inches in diameter.
  • You can use this on multiple surfaces.
    • In order to switch from carpet to hard floors, flip the Quickswitch from high to low.
    • If you use the low setting, you can safely vacuum most delicate rugs.
  • Like the other Oreck, this upright vacuum can pretty much lay flat against the floor.
  • Worried about the warranty?
    • You’re covered for seven years under a limited warranty, with access to three annual tuneups.
    • The belt in this bad boy should last a while; it’s an Endurolife belt!
  • The side brushes on this Oreck make cleaning beside baseboards simple.
  • Our final opinion…
    • Don’t expect this to get through shaggy, thick carpet easily. Since it’s a lightweight, multi-floor vacuum, it doesn’t always work miracles on thick carpet.
      • Though it is very powerful, unless you are patient enough to go over something several times, you may not like this one for big, fluffy rugs.

Dyson Ball Multi Floor

  • This is a pretty impressive model, and yes, we know all about how horrible Dyson vacuums can be.
    • The entire vacuum features HEPA filtration with Radial Root Cyclone technology!
      • It’s been certified by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). Visit their website if you’d like to learn a lot more about their testing techniques.
        • Mold spores, pollen, pet hair, and other allergens of similar size should easily be taken care of by this Dyson.
      • You should be able to wash and reuse the filter the lifetime of the vacuum.
  • The Multi Floor model works well and easily on hard floors and low (to medium) carpets.
    • We don’t recommend using vacuums on expensive (or antique), hardwood floors. Whip out a soft broom (or rag) for those.
      • Sometimes, large particles will make it difficult to safely navigate a vacuum over delicate floors. If you are afraid of scuffing your floors, stick to safer cleaning methods.
    • The cleaning head should adjust itself when you switch floor-types.
  • This upright vacuum cleaner weighs about seventeen pounds.
    • It’s a little over forty-two inches tall, thirteen inches wide, and fifteen inches in diameter.
  • The instant-release wand is pretty awesome and can reach the top of an average staircase. (Approximately fifty-one feet).
  • The cord is about thirty-five feet long.
  • This is a bagless, upright vacuum cleaner… and it’s definitely one of the best!
    • You should feel secure with a two-year warranty at least!
  • If the ball technology doesn’t give it away, this vacuum doesn’t lay as flat as the others… but you do have the option to purchase an interchangeable head!

Shark Navigator Lift-Away Professional (NV356E)

  • We love Shark vacuums. This one is particularly impressive because of its lift-away capability.
    • What does that mean? This upright vacuum cleaner can turn into a portable canister cleaner when you need it to!
    • Just prepare the hose and extension, press the button, and enjoy the extra mobility!
      • Your back will thank you.
      • Your wallet will thank you, in time, because this is a bagless vacuum.
        • The belt and filters are meant to last a lifetime, as well. Just keep the filter clean by washing it every now and then!
      • Shark vacuums are also known for not losing suction over time.
      • It’s lightweight, weighing less than fourteen pounds.
      • Stands approximately forty-five inches tall, fifteen inches wide, and twelve inches in diameter.
  • Enjoy a truly clean environment with HEPA filtration as well as Anti-Allergen Complete Seal Technology.
    • Particles between 0.3 and 0.5 micrometers in size should get trapped with an efficiency rate of 99.9%.
      • That’s really awesome if you ask us. We can breathe, in our own homes, as if we don’t have allergies anymore!
  • As well as the cool features we’ve already mentioned, this Shark comes with a crevice tool, Dust-Away attachment (for hard floors) & two microfiber pads.
  • The power cord is thirty feet long.
  • Upon purchase, you should be backed by a five-year, limited warranty.
  • Steering shouldn’t be a problem because this Shark has a swiveling head to ensure easy maneuvering.
  • You’ll have the option to turn the brush roll on or off as you go from carpet to hard floors.
    • The pet power brush should be included with this purchase, making it easy to keep pet hair off the furniture.

Shark Rotator Professional Lift-Away (NV501)

  • Let us state again how much we love Shark vacuums! They’re so handy!
    • Seriously, you can lift the canister away from the base in order to reach nooks, crannies, and ceilings! An upright vacuum that works as a canister cleaner as well?
      • This is what separates many Shark models from most other vacuums on the market!
      • Shark vacuums are more affordable than many other options, too.
      • The Rotator is bagless.
      • The weight is around fifteen pounds.
      • Stands approximately forty-six inches tall, twelve & a half inches wide, and thirteen & a half inches in diameter.
  • Along with an affordable price tag, the Shark Rotator Professional Lift-Away features a three-year warranty.
  • This upright vacuum features HEPA filtration and Anti-Allergen Complete Seal technology.
    • The HEPA filters should trap about 99.9% of debris as small as 0.3-0.5 micrometers in size.
  • The power cord is thirty feet long.
    • The power nozzle features LED headlights and three washable filters!
  • Don’t need the brush?
    • No worries; you can shut it off right underneath the power button.
  • If you’re using the hose, the handle is ergonomic! You wrists won’t have to hurt like crazy after extended cleaning with attachments.
  • This isn’t terribly loud for a vacuum, which we like.
    • We also think this is a pretty stylish model, which Shark is good about, as well.
    • Stylish, storable, and super efficient.
  • The Large Turbo Brush should easily remove pet hair from surfaces.
    • It really is one of the best extensions on the market right now for pet hair!

Soniclean VTplus VTU-0520

  • The Soniclean VTplus requires bags… but they’re HEPA bags!
    • The filtration system has a 99.97% success rate at trapping particles 0.3 micrometers in size. (This has become one of our favorite announcements!)
  • This upright vacuum cleaner weighs close to eleven pounds.
    • If you need to reach underneath a coffee table or your bed, you should be able to.
      • The VTplus has a lay-flat design!
  • We’re pretty impressed with the sonic technology.
    • It sends sonic vibrations through the carpet, loosening debris that seems to be hanging on for dear life.
      • That includes pet hair!
  • This is a nice, efficient choice for a fair price.
    • The design might not be appealing to some… it might actually bother some people because it isn’t very sleek.
    • It’s designed to be durable, though, and we love the way it handles hard-to-reach dirt.
  • It isn’t packed with features like some of our other options, but if you want clean carpets and the others aren’t priced fairly, consider it!
    • It is designed to use approximately fifty percent less electricity than some other full-sized vacuums.
    • There’s a light to alert you when the bag is full.
    • The Sonicfresh fragrance dispensing system is pretty cool to us.
  • The power cord is thirty-five feet long.

Hoover T-Series WindTunnel Pet UH30310

  • This WindTunnel Pet a bagged, upright vacuum cleaner.
    • Our favorite part about this vacuum is that it’s powerful, efficient, and budget-friendly.
    • It isn’t just budget-friendly, it’s allergy-friendly, too!
      • The bags are equipped with HEPA filters that can intercept 99.9% of allergens and pollutants 0.3 micrometers in size.
        • As if the bags weren’t fancy enough on their own, there’s a release button for emptying.
        • You hold the front handle and the cover should come off.
          • The bag is attached to this and above the bag is a release handle to empty the bag.
            • You won’t ever have to touch a dirty, full bag again!
      • When the bag’s full, the indicator should display.
    • It’s also back and shoulder friendly, weighing in around fifteen pounds.
  • You can turn the brush roll on or off so this WindTunnel Pet can clean hard floors.
    • The carpet height is adjustable, too. (Five different positions).
  • If you’re looking for a warranty, you’ll be happy to hear that you’re offered a limited, two-year warranty with this upright vacuum.
  • Don’t fret if you find yourself needing to replace the belt;
    • there are two levers you have to flip in order to have full access to the belt and brush roll.
  • With this purchase, you should receive the following accessories:
    • wand, crevice tool, and two pet tools.
      • The hose should be able to reach about twelve feet in length.
  • A headlight is featured on this WindTunnel Pet.
  • The power cord is thirty feet long.

Eureka AirSpeed Pro All Surface Rewind

  • We love the way this Eureka AirSpeed Pro handles hard floors.
    • It’s a little difficult to maneuver on carpets that aren’t short.
      • It’s powerful, just a little hard to push and pull, which isn’t ideal if you have weak shoulders or a bad back.
        • Part of the reason it’s so powerful is because of the direct airflow. Many vacuums don’t have strong suction because of how far the air travels.
    • We searched all over the place for evidence that the claim of featuring a “HEPA” filter was true… but we didn’t find any.
      • No legitimate proof that the filter captures particles 0.3 micrometers in size, anyway. We did find that it’s still a pretty efficient, washable filter.
  • You can adjust the suction power to suit your needs, whether you’re using the hose, vacuuming carpeting or hard floors.
    • The hose can reach up to twelve feet.
    • The power cord reaches twenty-seven feet in length.
  • It weighs less than twenty pounds.
    • The measurements are approximately forty-five inches, thirteen inches, and fifteen inches.
    • This is a bagless vacuum cleaner with two clips for quick-release from the bottom of the canister.
  • Though it isn’t a lay-flat vacuum by design, it can almost lay flat!
  • You can shut off the brush roll completely.
  • The cord rewind function is really sweet, especially if you’re tired by the time you’re done vacuuming!
    • This is one of our favorite features on this particular upright vacuum cleaner.

Sanitaire SC5713

  • We like this Sanitaire upright vacuum because it features true HEPA filtration.
    • It’s listed for being able to filter allergens that are 0.3 micrometers in size.
      • If we haven’t stressed it enough, it’s awesome to see proof on claims like this. (We did).
        • When the filter gets overly dirty, you can wash it!
    • Another cool fact is that this model has been tested and approved for use commercially.
      • If you’re a small business owner wanting to purchase a fair-priced vacuum, this might grab your attention!
  • This Sanitaire can clean a path that’s thirteen inches wide… pretty impressive.
  • It is a bagged, upright vacuum cleaner.
    • It weighs about twenty pounds.
    • It stands about twenty inches tall, thirty-four inches long, and eleven inches wide.
    • The power cord should reach forty feet in length.
      • It also has quick-release cord hooks.
    • The hose is built to avoid clogging and can stretch impressively well.
  • You should be able to request the limited two-year manufacturer’s warranty upon purchase and registration.

Dirt Devil Dynamite Plus M084650RED

  • The Dirt Devil Dynamite Plus is one of our cheapest options but it’s probably more efficient than you’d expect!
  • It weighs eleven pounds or less and can easily be stored in small closets.
  • Some accessories are included, like a dusting brush, crevice tool, and of course, the extension wand.
  • This isn’t a true HEPA vacuum to our knowledge.
  • The measurements are approximately forty-three inches, eleven inches, and ten inches.
  • This really isn’t an overly luxurious vacuum, but it packs a powerful punch for a small price, which is plenty for us!
    • One of our only complaints is that there is powerful airflow dispensed from the vacuum while in use. If you have lightweight, loose items, this can be inconvenient.
  • The power cord is about twenty-five feet long.

Our Top 3 Choices for Upright Vacuum Cleaners

We have to say that the Oreck Magnesium SP is probably our top choice. It’s lightweight, equipped to clean multiple surfaces, has a long power cord, and it can lay flat. It features true HEPA filtration. If you have a rug that is too delicate for other kinds of vacuums, this is a great option. Check it out for yourself if you don’t believe us!

Our second favorite choice is the Shark Navigator. Shark vacuums are known for never losing suction. This particular model is super-efficient at picking up pet hair with the pet power brush. If you have pets, we highly recommend this vacuum for the hairiest of them all! It also comes with a bare floor attachment and a reusable microfiber pad, which comes in handy more often than we thought it would.

For a fair price and the fact it can be used (safely) commercially, the Sanitaire SC5713B is our last top choice. It doesn’t come with as many bells and whistles as several of our other choices do, but it’s highly effective. We’ve experienced our fair share of clogged hoses and we appreciate the fact that Sanitaire took the time to ensure this hose is difficult as can be to clog! Did we mention that it’s a true HEPA vacuum, too? Yeah, we love it! It’s affordable and impressive. Take a gander at it if you’re uninterested in paying several hundred dollars for an upright vacuum cleaner.

No matter what you decide to do, we’re glad you took the time to read our research and we wish you luck with your shopping! Don’t settle for just any vacuum or spend too much money. Purchase the upright vacuum cleaner that is perfect for your needs!
