It wasn’t long ago that VR headsets seemed unrealistic and the idea may have only popped up in conversation amongst gamers.
Today, they’re around and offer interesting experiences for all users! Adults, children, grandparents, teachers, mechanics, it doesn’t matter who you are.
If you’re alive and breathing, you can probably enjoy VR headsets!

Valuable Information About VR Headsets

First and foremost, you should think about the kind of experience you expect from VR headsets.

Do you want to watch videos, play games, or both? Maybe you just want to view 3D images?

Your answer will influence the type of equipment you purchase significantly.

A ridiculous amount of virtual reality goggles and consoles exist now but there are a few that set the standard for each subcategory they dominate.

  • Mobile, tethered, or standalone?
    • The most important thing to think about is whether you want a headset that is compatible with your phone, a PC, a gaming console, or that provides its own viewing pieces.
    • Many users enjoy the mobility of using a phone-friendly headset while others prefer the power of one that is connected to a console.
    • There is usually a large price difference between each option depending on the features, so really look into this.
  • Inexpensive and entertaining or pricey and powerful?
    • Do you want something that you can hand to your kids without worrying about anything breaking or being too expensive to replace? There are plenty of models under $40 if so!
    • Or do you want something adults can enjoy that has plenty of accessories available to make it possible to experience total immersion in virtual reality?
    • Cost, to an extent, most definitely determines the quality of this type of product.
    • If you’re looking for a simplistic introduction to the world of VR, then don’t spend a lot of money and get something like Google Cardboard.
    • If you want to get lost in a game or video, prepare to spend a bit more on something like the PlayStation VR or the Oculus Rift.
  • How immersive would you like your experience to be?
    • This may seem redundant but it’s a serious question, folks!
    • Do you want to dedicate an entire room to virtual reality viewing and gaming? If so, you’ll probably need lots of gear and a powerful headset with a dedicated gaming PC or console.
    • Some of the most common accessory purchases would be movement and room trackers, controllers, headphones, apps/content, carrying cases, and more.
  • Pay attention to the small details!
    • If you’re wanting an extremely realistic image and feel, don’t settle for a model with a low-quality graphics card or a slow refresh rate.
    • Consider the field of view. If you want to feel like you’re a part of the 360-degree video you’re viewing, you won’t want a headset that offers much less than a 100-degree field of vision.
    • How much content is offered or supported by this product?
      • Some headsets have hundreds of apps, videos, and games just waiting to be used while others have a terribly limited selection to choose from.
    • We will repeat this a million times if we have to… see if the headset requires a console, a phone, or other accessories in order to function properly.
      • You don’t want to surprise someone with a PlayStation VR if they don’t have a PS4! (Unless you know they have every intention of getting one soon, perhaps?)
  • Consider the design and your level of comfort.
    • Some models are bulky and uncomfortable, some have adjustable straps and are lightweight, and there are others that are a combination of things.
    • Consider the weight, how it will be held on your head, and how it feels on your eyes.
      • Some models feature special lenses or filters that make it easier for users to enjoy hours of gameplay of video-viewing.
    • If you’re playing games and not just watching stuff, make sure the controllers are easy to use and don’t make you hold yourself in funny positions for extended periods of time.
  • How significant are the specs to you?
    • If you’re a tech junkie, you’ll definitely want to read up on the fine print and technical specifications.
    • What kind of display resolution do you desire?
    • Do you want something that can handle 3D, augmented reality, or mixed reality, too?
    • Are you looking for something to stream with professionally? You won’t want equipment that barely qualifies as a VR headset, then!
    • Do you need a lot of ports?
    • Is voice command a must-have for you?

While putting together our list, we wanted to include VR headsets that are totally affordable and aren’t chock full of features and state-of-the-art technology, headsets that require powerful components and produce breathtaking images and experiences, and headsets that fall somewhere in between.

Before we start discussing our favorite picks, please don’t forget to find out if the headset you’re interested in needs to be connected to a computer, gaming console, or another platform in order to run programs.

The Hottest VR Headsets Around Right Now

Oculus Rift + Touch

  • The Oculus Rift has been making waves in the world of virtual reality for a few years now.
    • Features an OLED screen.
    • Boasts a refresh rate of 90Hz and a resolution of 2160 x 1200 (1080 x 1200 per screen).
  • The Oculus Rift + Touch bundle is by far our favorite because of its sheer power and immersive capabilities.
    • Includes Touch controllers and two tracking sensors.
  • Unfortunately, this is not an affordable headset for all users, though it is one of the best on the market.
    • You will need a good gaming PC or console to use this, as it requires a Windows 8.1 or newer operating system and an NVIDIA GTX 1050Ti or AMD Radeon RX 470 graphics card.
    • Needs 8GB or more of RAM.
  • Purchase includes access to six free titles.
  • Weighs less than 10 pounds and provides a relatively comfortable wear.
  • Protected by a limited, one-year warranty.

HTC VIVE

  • The HTC VIVE is beating competition left and right because of its impressive functionality, accessories, and features.
    • It is, unfortunately, more expensive than many other options but we think it’s well worth its price.
  • You’ll need Windows 7 SP1, 8.1 or newer and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 480 graphics card with 4GB of RAM.
    • Ideally, you’d have Intel Core i5 or newer within your computer, too.
  • This weighs a bit more than we liked, but some users might not mind.
    • Weighs approximately 11 pounds.
  • This purchase should lock in a 2-month trial subscription to Viveport.
    • Worried about not having enough games or videos to choose from? Check out their extensive library and forget about worrying! (Over two thousand games to choose from).
  • Has a refresh rate of 90Hz.
  • Each screen has a resolution of 1080 x 1200 or 2160 x 1200 total.

PlayStation VR

  • The PlayStation VR is incredible to us because it’s made by a company that’s known for cutting-edge technology in terms of graphics and gameplay.
    • PlayStation has always proudly displayed games and consoles that force competitors to release new products to keep up with the potential of their own platforms.
    • For anyone wanting to get some serious virtual reality gaming in, this is the VR headset for you.
  • The biggest downfall? Needing a PS4 and accessories… but the same could be said of the VR headsets that require a PC.
    • Taking that information into consideration, this is usually more affordable than the Oculus Rift and HTC VIVE, even after purchasing the required console!
    • To get the most out of your unit, you should get a PlayStation Camera and Motion Controllers.
  • This is pretty lightweight.
  • The field of view is nice, at 100 degrees.
    • Features OLED display and 3D audio.
    • One screen with a resolution of 1080 x 960.

Samsung Gear VR (w/Controller)

  • The Samsung Gear VR is a great headset for users that just want to be able to use their phone as the main platform.
  • It’s surprisingly affordable (as long as you already have a phone that works with it), costing much less than $200 on average.
  • This particular model should come with a controller that makes pointing, selecting, dragging, and dropping things easy and fluid.
  • Compatible with many games as it is powered by Oculus.
  • Makes viewing 2D, 3D, and 360-degree videos/images feel real.
  • Extremely lightweight compared to many other models.
  • Unfortunately, this is not an ideal headset for children. There are models out there that are designed for use by children. This is definitely not one of them.
  • Believe it or not, the resolution for this would put some of the higher-end models to shame if it used the entire screen for VR.
    • The possible maximum resolution could be 1480 x 1440 per eye.

Google OEM Daydream View

  • The Google OEM Daydream View is affordable yet impressively immersive for a phone-dependent VR headset.
    • You just need a Daydream-ready phone and the included controller in order to start using the headset.
  • The list of apps and games is constantly expanding.
  • Easy to enjoy 360-degree images and videos and get lost in them.
    • The resolution should be about 1920 x 1080.
  • One of the lightest VR headsets we’ve come across, weighing less than five pounds.
  • We love the fact that the face pad is able to be washed by hand! That means it’s more hygienic and less wasteful than many other options!
    • There are many replacement sanitation pads available for other models, we just like that this one has a reusable, washable option.

DESTEK V4

  • The DESTEK V4 is a surprisingly effective phone-based VR headset.
    • Offers a 103-degree field of view.
    • Fits phones with 4.5-6″ screens.
    • Compatible with Google Cardboard 2.0 applications.
  • Weighs less than 5 pounds.
  • This is the most affordable option we came across.
    • By affordable, we mean inexpensive yet completely efficient and powerful enough to impress new and existing users.
  • Might not be the highest quality VR headset overall but it is the best in its class!
  • Adjustable strap, pupil distance, and an easily-reached conductive touch button make it easy to interact with programs or re-center yourself.
  • One of our favorite features is the protective lenses.
    • The anti-reflective coating and anti-blue light coating make it easy for users to use these headsets for extended periods of time without excessive discomfort.

The Lenovo Mirage Solo with Daydream will be hitting the market before you know it… and it promises to pack a powerful punch!

It seems like it will immediately compete with the HTC VIVE and Google Daydream, so we’re excited about its release! We urge you to keep your eyes peeled for this beauty.

Deciding on Your Dream VR Headset

Once you’re over the hype of introducing yourself (or a loved one) to the awesomeness of virtual reality, there are some serious things to consider.

You’ll want to think about your budget and your expectations first and foremost. If you want something simple to show your grandparents (instead of trying to explain what VR is to them), check out Google Cardboard.

It is literally, at least partially, composed of cardboard. This is the most environmentally-friendly option around and it costs less than $20! Place a phone in it and let your grandparents experience a 360-degree video for the first time.

Simple isn’t sweet enough for you? No problem.

If you’re serious about virtual reality, there are 3 devices you’ll probably want to choose from. The Oculus Rift + Touch, the HTC VIVE Pro, or the PlayStation VR.

Each is valuable in its own way, offering different features, accessories, apps, and more.

If you want top-of-the-line, celebrity-status virtual reality experiences, we suggest spending more money on the Oculus Rift or VIVE Pro. Those are often used by professional gamers and streamers across the world because they’re compatible with powerful computers, offering the most impressive apps and games.

If you’re wanting to land somewhere in the middle of it all, not sacrificing too much quality for affordability, the PlayStation VR is the way to go.

The PlayStation VR is great for younger users as well as middle-aged users alike because you can basically make it as immersive or unrealistic as you like… plus there are so many fun PlayStation games that are compatible with the VR!

All in all, you really need to think about your own expectations or the expectations the recipient will likely have.

You don’t want to spend tons of money on something that does not live up to the hype! Luckily, we didn’t come across many models that were over $100 that didn’t provide plenty of power.

Don’t forget to think about how much something weighs when you have to wear it on your head. Just as it’s harmful to us to hold our heads down, looking at the screen of our phone all day, it’s harmful to wear something heavy on top of your head for extended periods of time.

If VR headsets don’t weigh less than 20 pounds, we don’t recommend using them at all.

Thank you for learning about VR headsets with us today and we hope you find what you’re looking for!

We will be happy to hear your thoughts
